MULLAN, ID - Whitefish resident Alex Mandarino, 26, has been identified as the man who was shot and killed by an Idaho State Trooper during a scuffle Wednesday afternoon near Lookout Pass.
The incident happened at a turnout near mile maker 73 on I-90 in eastern Shoshone County.
Investigators had the area sealed off Thursday after an ISP trooper shot and killed the man inside a Scion.
"We don't know why he had a gun in his possession, why he struggled with us. We don't know," Kootenai County Sheriff's Office Lt. Stu Miller said.
The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation and officials say the incident happened after a Shoshone County deputy and ISP trooper were sent to check on Mandarino, who was sleeping in his car Wednesday afternoon.
Mandarino had a gun and after a scuffle broke out, the trooper shot the Whitefish man.
The deputy and the trooper weren't hurt in the incident and have been placed on administrative leave while investigators try to piece together what happened.
"From this point on, we put all the pieces together as to why he was there at the scene [and] what his intention was for being in the area he was in," Miller explained.
An autopsy on was performed on Mandarino Thursday, but the results aren't expected back for some time.
A check Mandarino's possible criminal history in Idaho and Montana turned up no records.
Mandarino's family also lives in the Flathead. His mother told us she was too distraught to talk publicly about her son and what may have happened.
