BOZEMAN - One man is dead after his motorcycle collided with a van on Norris Road Sunday afternoon, Madison County Sheriff Dave Schenk said.
Montana Highway Patrol says the victim was 50 years old and an employee of MSU. He reportedly moved from Indiana to Gallatin County 9 months ago.
MHP Trooper Michael Walrath says the victim was the lead motorcyclist in a group of 4 and was an inexperienced rider. He came around a corner headed west on Norris Road near mile marker 7 and drifted into the eastbound lane striking an oncoming van. Walrath says bystanders stopped to provide assistance, one attempted to give the victim CPR but he was pronounced dead by the time Walrath arrived on scene.
No one else was injured in the crash. Walrath says inexperience and speed were contributing factors in the accident. The victim was wearing a helmet.
Norris Road was shut down in both directions near mile marker 7 from about 2 p.m. until just after 7 p.m. while MHP officials wrapped up their investigation.
The name of the victim will be released once his family has been notified.
