BOZEMAN - A motorcyclist killed in a collision on Norris Road Sunday afternoon has been identified as Montana State University's chief information officer.
Dewitt Latimer, 50, died after his motorcycle collided with a van near mile marker 7, according to Madison County Sheriff Dave Schenk.
Latimer was the lead motorcyclist in a group of four and was an inexperienced rider, according to Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Michael Walrath. Latimer reportedly came around a corner headed west on Norris Road near mile marker 7 and drifted into the eastbound lane, striking an oncoming van. Walrath says bystanders stopped to provide assistance and one attempted to perform CPR, but Latimer was pronounced dead by the time Walrath arrived on scene.
According to MSU's website in a story that was published in June 2012, Latimer was hired as the chief information officer to provide oversight, management and strategic planning for the university's information technology infrastructure. Latimer is from Indiana and his family still resides there, Schenk said.
Norris Road was shut down in both directions near mile marker 7 from about 2 p.m. until just after 7 p.m. while MHP officials wrapped up their investigation.
No one else was injured in the crash. Walrath says inexperience and speed were contributing factors in the accident. Latimer was wearing a helmet. Authorities say Latimer did not have a motorcycle license but did have a learner's permit.
