UPDATE - BOZEMAN - A Bozeman woman is dead after a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Stucky and Cottonwood roads Monday morning.
The 44-year-old woman was traveling westbound on Stucky Road at around 7:30 a.m. when she failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Cottonwood Road, Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Glen Barcus said. The woman, who was driving a Subaru wagon, pulled in front of a pickup truck that was heading northbound on Cottonwood Road. The driver of the pickup truck, a 29-year-old Bozeman man, swerved to avoid the Subaru but was unable to miss it and the car was T-boned, Barcus said.
The woman was extricated from the vehicle by Rae-Sourdough Volunteer Fire Department and taken to Bozeman Deaconess Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The woman's 7-year-old son, who was a passenger in the Subaru, suffered blunt force trauma to the head and a facial laceration. He is in Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. The driver of the pickup is also in the hospital with unknown injuries. There were no passengers in the pickup truck.
After the car impacted with the truck, it went into a ditch and caught on fire. The fire, which started due to the force of the impact, was extinguished by responding sheriff's deputies and passersby.
Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were involved, Barcus said.
As of 11:30 a.m., cleanup was still underway at the scene of the crash.
Montana Highway Patrol, the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office, Rae-Sourdough VFD and the county road department responded to the scene.
