BUTTE - Officials have determined that the body found on the East Ridge Thursday night is that of a Butte man in his mid 50s.
Butte-Silver Bow Sheriff Ed Lester says he does not believe the man has family in Butte.
Three adults hiking the East Ridge reported the body around 10 p.m. Thursday. The body was in a remote area about three-quarters of the way up to the Lady of the Rockies.
It took about an hour and a half for members of search and rescue to hike to its location. Search and rescue members recovered the body today.
The man was dressed as if he'd been hiking in the area.
There are no missing persons reported at this time. Authorities did not recover a cell phone or find a vehicle in the area.
The body is being taken to the state crime lab in Missoula.
"Given the area that he was and the terrain, it's very possible that he could have fallen, injured his leg or hit his head and then been unable to get himself safely out of the area," Lester said.
Authorities recommend you do not go hiking alone. Always tell someone where you are and be prepared for the elements.
