Two young men learn a hard lesson in the back country of Big Sky.

Gallatin County law enforcement received a call late Saturday night from someone who reported that his roommates were overdue from a day ski trek. Big Sky Search and Rescue were dispatched and responded to the Windy Pass Trailhead up Portal Creek around 11:30 p.m.

Crews found the two men after a short skin up the trail to Golden Trout Lake. Neither were injured. They had hunkered down for the night with a fire.

The search team was able to get them back on the trail, and out to the trailhead without incident. An official with Big Sky Search and Rescue called it a "pretty routine backcountry learning experience."

Big Sky Search and Rescue has been doing a backcountry safety campaign for the 2011-2012 ski season and now the this year's ski season.

The message? If you are going out of bounds, Sharpen your skills, bring the proper safety gear and always bring a partner. Think risk then reward.
