Federal lawmakers are trying to strike a deal to avoid automatic spending cuts set to kick in March 1.

Unless Congress takes action, "sequestration" calls for a series of defense cuts of more than $500 billion over the next 10 years.

David Weissman of the Montana Defense Alliance says if that occurs, Malmstrom Air Force Base could see a 16% reduction in its budget.

"They're looking at where they can take out, so they're not missing mission essentials. Supplies, TDYs that they have, ones that they can affect without directly affecting the rest of the mission," Weissman said.

While he hopes it's not the solution, Weissman believes sequestration is the only way to get these cuts accomplished.
