HELENA - It was close to chaos on the Senate floor in Helena this afternoon.
When a Democratic state senator failed to show up for a vote on GOP-led ballot measures, Republicans reconvened the floor session anyway, resulting in desk pounding and howls of protest from Democrats.
Senate minority leader Jon Sesso of Butte said he would use a parliamentary procedure, which requires every member of the body to be present before the session can continue. It's known as "Call of the Senate" and is rarely used.
Republicans contend that Democrats are using the move to kill ballot referendums which Democrats oppose.
Republicans started voting on bills while Democrats loudly protested.
The Senate has been adjourned for the day until tomorrow.
