HELENA - A bill which creates a public charter school system has passed the Montana Senate.
Senator Dave Lewis of Helena is carrying Senate Bill 374 which allows for the creation of a public school alternative. The bill came to the floor with few side boards leaving the structure and governance up to those who form the charter school.
Senator Alan Olson of Roundup amended the bill requiring charter schools to be subject to oversight by local school boards. While many opposed the amendment because they believed it gutted the bill, it passed.
Sixteen Democrats were the only ones to vote against the bill saying it takes money from public schools which are already under funded. The bill needs to pass one more vote before heading to the House.
