DETROIT, OR - A Stevensville-based helicopter crashed Monday in Oregon, claiming at least one life.
The logging chopper, registered to Gitmo Holdings, LLC, went down near the Linn/Marion County Line.
The helicopter was being used to take logs from a cutting area to a log deck when it crashed, with authorities saying that the pilot had just come back from a break before taking off.
Witnesses say they hear a loud snapping sound followed by logs hitting the ground. They then say they saw the rotor separate from the chopper before the helicopter turned upside down and crashed.
The pilot, who authorities say was a 57-year-old man from Florida was the only person on-board, and he died at the scene.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.
