To help prevent fires from ever happening, the month of October is designated as Fire Safety month.

Firefighters from across the valley are working on community education to prevent fires from happening to you and your home. Brian Nickolay with Rae Sourdough Fire, says there are several things you can do, that might just save your home from a fire, including checking your smoke detectors, and replacing the batteries.

"This time of year it's going to become big furnaces kicking on people using wood stoves, make sure your stoves are clean. If a fire breaks out, main thing is make sure everyone gets out safely. Probably the second biggest thing that we see that people miss is reporting it as soon as you find it. Calling 911 and getting the fire department notified right away," says Nickolay.

Nickolay says later this month Rae Sourdough firefighters will visit community schools in an effort to educate everyone on how to keep homes safe from fires.
