POLSON - Prosecutors say the suspect in Saturday's fatal stabbing, Makueeyapeh Whitford, has an extensive criminal history in Washington, including six felony convictions.
Whitford is now facing a deliberate homicide charge for the death of John Pierre, 26, who was stabbed at around 4 a.m. on Saturday at a house party on First Street East in Polson, where Whitford and Pierre were both guests.
Prosecutors say two people were sitting in a car near the house listening to music and at some point, they turned the music down.
Pierre reportedly went up to the car and asked what happened to the music.
Investigators say that in response to that question, Whitford allegedly came up to Pierre and stabbed him once in the chest with a folding knife.
Whitford then left in a car, but not before one of the witnesses at the party slashed one of his tires with a knife.
Investigators say Pierre died at St. Joseph Medical Center in Polson from a single stab would to the upper chest, which nicked his heart.
Police found Whitford at a Polson motel shortly after the stabbing, and that's where they also found a knife with blood on it.
Witnesses told officers that Whitford was hostile toward other people at the party earlier in the night and investigators don't believe Pierre and Whitford knew each other before the stabbing.
Whitford is scheduled to appear in Lake County District Court on Wednesday morning.
