As the 2013-2014 school year begins, Montana Tech is in the process of developing its first ever PhD program.
Tech will partner with Montana State University and the University of Montana to offer the material sciences doctorate. Students at any of these three campuses will be able to enroll in the program starting next fall.
Tech Chancellor Don Blackketter says this year staff is writing curriculum and recruiting students for the program. They are also raising money for the research component.
"The material science program is probably one of the broader science and engineering programs," Blackketter explains. "At Montana Tech the material scientist that will graduate from here will be in extractive metallurgy. So they will look at how they take ore and refine ore into a product and keep the environment safe."
Bozeman and Missoula students enrolled in the material science PhD program will focus their studies on biofilm and biomaterials.
