BOZEMAN - Montana State's Jeff Mohl has won the prestigious heptathlon title at the Big Sky indoor track and field championship.

Going into the pole vault, the next to last event, Mohl trailed by 114 points, but his main competition, Austin Emery from the University of Montana failed to clear a height, scoring no points while Mohl jumped 16 feet, 3/4 inches to win and guarantee himself the heptathlon title.

There was however one event left, the 1,000 meters, and Mohl needed to finish in 2:49 to set a new conference points record in the heptathlon. The senior from Red Lodge finished second in the event but his time of 2:49.56 just missed the record by two points. Mohl's Bobcat teammate Pow Williamson from Billings finished in second place overall.
