Russell Heit, serving a 100-year sentence in the Montana State Prison for murder, was found hanging in an outbuilding at the state prison Friday morning and was later pronounced dead.
Heit, 58, was working on a prison road crew outside of the prison walls at the time.
He was unresponsive when prison officials discovered him.
Heit had been at the prison since 1989, after being convicted of deliberate homicide in Yellowstone County.
In 1988, Heit was found guilty of killing bartender Gary Loos during a robbery at the Acton Bar north of Billings.
When he was arrested the day after the killing, Heit admitted to the crime.
Investigators with the Montana Department of Corrections are investigating his death.
