HELENA - The Montana Department of Labor is warning employers not to comply with emails claiming to be sent by the Division of Unemployment Assistance.
The initial email surfaced in Massachusetts, but the scam has now made its way to a Red Lodge business in Montana. It asks for critical information regarding employers who may have filed for unemployment assistance.
"Identity thieves are getting craftier. They are finding new ways to get personal information from people and businesses will unknowingly give out that information thinking it's a legitimate request for information," Casey Kyler-West of the MT Department of Labor explained.
The Labor Department warns that any employer receiving this email should not reply to it.
If you have questions about the scam or have received such an email, call the fraud investigation office at (406) 444.1709 or email dliuidci@mt.gov.
