MISSOULA - A detention officer who was fired after allegedly punching an inmate at the Missoula County Detention Center has now been charged with misdemeanor assault for the incident.

Warren Soss is accused of punching an inmate 10 times in the head and four times in the stomach.

Charging documents say on Nov. 13, Soss entered the inmate's cell to clean up garbage and a scuffle ensued when the inmate tried to leave the cell.

A Missoula Sheriff's detective reviewed video of the incident and it showed Soss throwing the inmate back into his cell, over the toilet and toward the wall.

When the man tried to protect himself, Soss allegedly punched him repeatedly in the head and torso.

Soss stopped when the other detention officer yelled at him.

Misdemeanor assault is punishable by up to six months in jail and a $500 fine.
