Alyson Grinestaff, Miss Rodeo Montana 2013, has been sidelined by medical problems.
Grinestaff recently had an MRI in Billings to determine the cause of back pain that she had been experiencing; the exam revealed that she is suffering from two levels of bulging discs in her lower back.
The orthopedic surgeon recommended that she not ride a horse or "participate in a vigorous schedule" for the near future in order to avoid surgery and prevent serious lifelong injury.
Jody Rempel, director of Miss Rodeo Montana, Inc., said in a press release that, "Our board has made the decision, in the best interest of Alyson's health, to cancel all upcoming appearances that are currently scheduled, up to and including the Miss Rodeo America Pageant."
Grinestaff said, "Being Miss Rodeo Montana has truly been a dream come true for me. The past few months have also been very challenging for me as I have been experiencing incredible pain trying to ride at rodeos and press on through my demanding schedule. It is heartbreaking to have my time as Miss Rodeo Montana disrupted."
She continued, "It is because of my love for horses and the western lifestyle that I want to do everything in my power to heal and be able to enjoy and be a part of that lifestyle for the rest of my life, even if that means halting completely for the next few months. I guess that WHOA means WHOA!"
Miss Teen Rodeo Montana 2013, Alaini Lorash, will fill in for Grinestaff at a number of appearances.
The 2014 Miss Rodeo Montana and Miss Teen Rodeo Montana Pageants, scheduled to held in January in Great Falls, will go on planned.
