BILLINGS - It appears oil isn't the only thing fueling the Bakken boom.
A federal indictment unsealed Wednesday, details the operation of what Montana US Attorney Michael Cotter alleges is a major drug ring.
The government says the drug ring involved a network of couriers across Montana to distribute pure methamphetamine in the Bakken oil fields of eastern Montana and North Dakota.
In court documents, federal prosecutors allege that the drug ring operated in Sidney, Fairview, Billings, Big Timber, Columbus, Livingston and Bozeman beginning in April of 2012.
Washington State resident Robert Ferrell Armstrong, also known as Dr. Bob, is accused of being the ring leader.
The indictment also names four other co-conspirators, Robert John Ferrell, Kara Dawn Evans, LLoyd Leon Westervelt, and Jennie Lynn Britt who the government alleges also used firearms to facilitate their drug trafficking crimes.
The Associated Press reports the defendants pleaded not guilty to the drug and weapons charges in Billings federal court Wednesday.
