SHELBY - The item believed to be a homemade improvised explosive device or pipe bomb found near I-15 was actually just a hoax device, according to Toole County Sheriff Donna Whitt.
The incident forced several miles of the interstate to be shut down for more than five hours on Thursday.
Whitt says her office received a call just before 11 a.m. from someone who reported finding the device. After calling in the explosive ordnance disposal team from Malmstrom Air Force Base, crews tell us the suspicious item turned out to be a realistic looking "hoax device."
A state worker near the scene tells us that the device was detonated.
There are still several questions surrounding the incident.
The Toole County Sheriff's Office will only say at this point that they are still investigating.
