HELENA - It's a parent's worst nightmare: Sunday morning a 2-year-old boy in only a diaper was found wandering down the street and it took authorities an hour to locate the home where his father was still sleeping.
The father told police that the door was locked, but the child had recently learned how to unlock the door.
Sergeant Jason Zander of the Helena Police Department said that the child made it up the stairs from the basement apartment on the 1800 block of Last Chance Gulch and wandered about a block and a half away.
It was at the cross streets of Poplar and Villard that a nearby resident spotted the child and alerted authorities at around 7 a.m.
The child appeared to be perfectly fine, but the father was cited with endangerment of a child.
Police suggest that it's important that locks are placed out of reach of small children.
