ELENA - Map publisher Rand McNally handed out their "Best Of The Road" awards recently, and Helena has been designated as the best place for geocaching in America for 2013.
If you're unfamiliar with what geocaching is, simply put: it's a high-tech treasure hunt using a GPS or smartphone, according to Heidi O'Brien, the executive director of the Helena Tourism Alliance, and the brains behind Helena's now famous GeoTour.
Helena's tour includes 38 different caches, or destinations, laid out in a 30-mile radius around Helena.
The tour has already attracted many out-of-state and out-of-town tourists and focuses on the best of Helena.
"We got the award and we've already gotten people, there are comments on Geocaching's Facebook page: ‘Road trip,' 'Going to Helena,' 'Who wants to go to Helena with me?' I mean, it's going to be huge for us to say that we are the best," said O'Brien.
O'Brien said she also recommends that locals give the Helena GeoTour a try, they could end up in parts of Helena they didn't know existed.
