Helena man arrested for shoplifting allegedly tried to steal officer's gun

HELENA - Jacob Lee Mashek is behind bars after allegedly assaulting officers trying to arrest him for shoplifting.

He was arrested Tuesday afternoon for reportedly trying to steal a $50 electric shaver from Shopko.

According to police reports, he also had a probation violation.

While he was being handcuffed, Mashek reportedly struggled with the police officer and attempted to take his pistol.

Helena Police Chief Troy McGee said, "Mashek started struggling with the officer and fighting with the officer, and at one time was trying to get the officer's gun out of its holster. The loss prevention officer that works at Shopko noticed what was going on...and was in the same room and assisted the officer and they finally got Mr. Mashek under control."

Mashek is being held on a $50,000 bond.
