BILLINGS - A Billings man accused of raping several women entered a not guilty plea Thursday morning.
The accused rapist, 41-year-old Toby Eugene Griego appeared by video in Yellowstone County District Court before Judge Mary Jane Knisely.
Griego faces 38 charges including 10 felony counts of sexual intercourse without consent, six felony robbery counts, three felony counts of aggravated kidnapping, two felony counts of intimidation, one felony count of assault with a weapon, two felony counts of aggravated assault, two misdemeanor and eight felony counts of surreptitious visual observation or recordation, three felony and one misdemeanor count of criminal possession of dangerous drugs.
If found guilty, Griego could spend life in prison without parole.
Yellowstone County Chief Deputy Attorney Rod Souza read off the long list of Griego's charges and requested he continue to be held on a $1,000,000 bond. He also requested if Griego posts bond, he be placed on a GPS monitoring system to allow for tracking.
On Wednesday, prosecutors filed nine additional felony charges against Griego, connecting him to a third victim. Evidence alleges Griego was involved in kidnappings, assaults, rapes and robberies that occurred in January, May and July.
On Friday, August 23rd, the Billings Police Department and members of the U.S. Marshals Violent Offender Task Force arrested Griego at his home on the 400 block of South 30th Street in Billings.
Court documents filed say after confiscating Griego's phone, investigators found multiple photos and videos of Griego in the act of the crimes.
Griego moved to Billings in 2008 from New Mexico, where he had previously served a prison sentence after being convicted of sexually assaulting two women in the late 1990's.
The details of those crimes share striking similarities to assaults and stalking habits Griego allegedly implemented while going about committing sex crimes in Yellowstone County.
According to court documents detailing the two sexual assaults Griego is charged with perpetrating in May and July, the suspect broke into the women's homes while they were sleeping and their roommates were not at home.
In both instances, the victims were bound, photographed, robbed and assaulted physically and sexually in their homes, cars, at various bank parking lots and near a canal in Billings.
The Billings Police Department was first made aware of Griego as a possible suspect on July 15th, when a tip given to CrimeStoppers pointed investigators toward Hobby Lobby in Billings.
Officers interviewed several of the employees who told them that Griego frequently would come into Hobby Lobby and follow female customers around the store-possibly photographing them on occasion.
Investigators then began following Griego through various stakeouts and monitoring methods before executing a search warrant on the suspect's residence, car and phone.
According to court documents, images on Griego's phone were found to be related to the sexual assault crimes in May and July and also included various images of unidentified women from outside of bedroom windows in Yellowstone County.
The officers executing the search warrant in Griego's home also found various illegal drugs.
A preliminary trial date has been set for January 13th, 2014.
