Great Falls police are investigating the possible poisoning death of three dogs.

Officials say they responded to a call in the 1800 block of 5th Avenue North on Wednesday morning, and when they arrived, they found two dead dogs in the back yard of one of the homes.

Later in the afternoon, they were called back once again for another dog laying in the neighbor's yard.

While the appearance of the animals and their surroundings did not seem suspicious, they are looking into claims that the pets may have been poisoned.

We spoke to neighbors who say they believe the dogs may have eaten contaminated sausage; one resident says he had heard a man with a dislike of the dogs bragging about it beforehand.

But officers say it will take time before they know what caused the deaths.

Sgt. Bryan Slavik of the Great Falls Police Department said, "In this particular case the animals are being placed in veterinary care, an autopsy for an animal is being taken care of, so when we get those results we'll know a little bit more about hopefully what killed them."

Neighbors who found one of the dogs in their backyard say they do not know who it belonged to.
