MISSOULA - The girlfriend of the Hellgate High School senior killed on Mullan Road on Monday, is remembering him as a kind, caring and outgoing man. Reporter Irina Cates spoke with Chance Geery's girlfriend as she recalled the tragic accident.
Gabrielle Rosier erected a memorial for her 18-year-old boyfriend, who was a Hellgate High School senior and a football standout.
"He was straight as an arrow. He never drank, never smoked, never did anything. He was popular-he wasn't like a jock that you think," Gabrielle said. "He made friends with anybody and everybody, didn't matter who they were or why they were there."
Chance and Gabrielle started making their way back from the downtown area to the home where Gabrielle was house sitting on Monday afternoon.
"[We] turned the corner. I'd been walking on this street and we were hit from behind," she recalled.
Gabrielle said they didn't see the car coming. Police say the 38-year-old woman drove up onto the sidewalk and hit the couple.
Chance was taken to the hospital where he later died, and Gabrielle was also injured. "My shoulder is dislocated and I have a couple bruises along my arm, but nothing major," Gabrielle said.
Chance was a defensive lineman for the Hellgate Knights.
"When he's be on the line, they would have three guys against him at once, because they just couldn't hold him back-he had such an ambition," Gabrielle recalled.
Chance also wanted to gain weight so he could try out for the Griz.
"He had a really hard time getting over 225 pounds. The morning of the crash we actually weighed him and he weighed 235, and I said good job getting over that. And he said 'well, I've been eating four sandwiches a day'," Gabrielle said.
Gabrielle added that Chance helped her bring blankets to the homeless, and once they stayed up to help a poor man who lived nearby.
"[He] was living in a camper in the middle of January and he had no heat, no nothing, dogs. So, Chance stayed up with me one night till midnight making homemade dog food and went out there and made him some hot coffee-brought him hot coffee,"Gabrielle said.
Chance and Gabrielle dated for nearly five years.
A memorial for Chance Geery will be held this Friday at noon at Washington-Grizzly Stadium, with the entrance on the south side of the stadium opening up at 11 a-m.
Those close to Geery are asking funeral attendees to wear a jersey of any team and of any sport.
A memorial fund has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank for Chance.
