Gallatin County is now one of the fastest growing counties in the state and according to the Montana Department of Commerce, by 2017, the population is expected to reach more than 100,000 people. That's an increase of 6,500 people in just 4 years.
From 2014 through 2060, Gallatin County is expected to become and stay the 3rd largest county in the state following Missoula and Yellowstone County. All 3 counties are expected to have steady growth during that time.
Gallatin County Commissioner Steve White Says the county has managed to stay ahead of the curve with the new detention facility and prepping roads for anticipated growth.
The new detention center, White says, addresses the health, safety and welfare of a rapidly growing population. The detention center is currently shared with 4 other counties and White says the county is able to back off the external contracts once the population gets larger.
White says he expects the most growth to occur in the 4-Corners and Belgrade area and construction of the new Belgrade interchange offering the biggest advantages for increased population.
"There's a section of bare land on the south side of the interstate and once that interchange goes in then that land could become a valuable commodity for commercial construction." Said White.
Gallatin County is anticipated to grow at a faster rate than Flathead, Lewis and Clark and Cascade Counties as time progresses.
