Up to 15 mine openings will be closed this summer because of safety reasons.
The Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest possesses several open adits (an entrance to an underground mine which is horizontal or nearly horizontal) and mine shafts with unstable structures or debris.
The Madison, Wise River and Dillon Ranger Districts will be closed while an abandoned mine inventory is underway.
Mine openings will be closed by installing bat-friendly structures, polyurethane foam or backfilling with materials.
Direct any requests for additional information about the closure of these hazardous mine openings on the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest to Licette Hammer, Forest Physical Scientist, at (406) 683-3911 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
