A female pedestrian was killed when she was struck by a vehicle while walking on Interstate 15 south of Butte on Tuesday night.

Dispatchers received a report of a hit and run around 6:20 p.m., with authorities saying a female and one other person were driving north on I-15.

They apparently stopped near the Buxton exit at some point, and when the woman got out of the car, she was hit by another vehicle that did not stop.

The woman died at the scene and northbound traffic was stopped for three hours as emergency crews worked at the scene.

Montana Highway Patrol troopers think that someone in a passing vehicle may have stopped and talked to the woman shortly before she was struck.

MHP is asking for the driver of that vehicle to please contact them in case they have any information.
