WEST GLACIER - The first day of summer is being celebrated in Glacier National Park with the opening of the full, 50-mile, stretch of the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road.
Park spokesperson Denise Germann was the messenger with the good news, reporting that the entire road between West Glacier and St. Mary's officially opened up at 8:30 a.m. on Friday.
The full 50 miles will remain open until Sept, 22, while park officials say the last day to drive to Logan Pass will be on Oct. 20.
There had been concerns that the opening of the park's tourism life-blood would be delayed this year because of sequestration cuts.
However, the Glacier National Park Conservancy stepped up to help make sure that crews would be working as usual during the spring.
