HELENA - Kolby David Schmidt was arrested Wednesday afternoon following a high-speed chase and a rollover.
It started Tuesday evening when a relative of Schmidt reported that his car had been stolen by Schmidt.
Schmidt, who is listed as an escapee by the Montana Department of Corrections, was then considered armed and dangerous because the owner of the car, who is soon to be deploying overseas with the MT National Guard, told law enforcement there there was a revolver in the car.
On Wednesday at around 3 p.m. a deputy sheriff spotted the car and began chasing Schmidt near the intersection of Lake Helena Drive and York Road.
Lewis & Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton says," There were no deputies behind him at the time and it was a God-send that the guy driving a red vehicle was not hit. He did roll the vehicle here and then the suspect took off running and he got about a mile down the road (York Road) where deputies did apprehend him."
Schmidt was taken to St. Peters Hospital; the nature and extent of his injuries has not been released, and no one else was injured.
Dutton said that schools from Warren to East Gate were alerted to not run buses during the time of the chase, and East Helena Public Schools implemented a lockdown for a brief period.
Authorities are continuing their investigation; we will update you when we learn more.
