BUTTE - A paperwork error leaves the Butte School District $700,000 short.
The money was never levied and reported to the tax assessor's office, Butte-Silver Bow County Superintendent Cathy Maloney said.
As a result, taxpayers were not charged for the funds last year.
This money was intended for a Building Reserve Fund, a $7 million mill levy approved by voters in May 2008. The paperwork was completed last August.
The school district noticed the mistake last Wednesday. Maloney says the deficit will not have a major impact. It will set back several projects the district had planned, but they will recover.
"There are numerous hands that are working on this paperwork all the time. I don't feel that it's any one person or department's error. It was a mistake that was made that nobody paid enough attention to to catch," Maloney said.
Officials with the district say this may affect a project underway to update the parking lot at Butte High School.
