CROW AGENCY - The Crow Nation is mourning the death this week of tribal elder Hartford "Sonny" Black Eagle Jr.

The 78-year-old father of Crow Tribal chairman Cedric Black Eagle, died Monday from respiratory problems.

Four years ago, just weeks prior to Montana's presidential primary, Sonny and his family ceremoniously adopted then presidential candidate Barack Obama into the Crow Nation.

During that June 2008 visit to Crow Agency, then Sen. Barack Obama referred to himself as "Barack Black Eagle." He pledged that if elected, he would improve relations between American Indian tribes and the federal government.

A White House official says the President called Black Eagle's wife, Mary, to express his condolences Wednesday.

Funeral services for Black Eagle are scheduled Thursday in Crow Agency, followed by interment at Lodge Grass Cemetery.
