A former Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Commissioner convicted of sex crimes reportedly tried to kill himself in a jail cell.
Robert Pierce was convicted of felony sexual assault and sexual intercourse without consent last Thursday.
Immediately after the verdict was read, Piece was taken across the street to the police station and put in detention.
Anaconda Police Chief Tim Barkell says that same day Pierce ripped up his shirt and tried to hang himself.
Pierce was moved into an isolated jail cell for a day.
Then a crisis response employee for Western Montana Mental Health determined Pierce was in good enough shape and was moved back into a populated jail cell with other inmates.
Currently a pre-sentence investigation is underway.
Once that report is submitted a sentencing date will be scheduled.
