Depending on weather conditions, the Bureau of Land Management's Butte Field Office will conduct a controlled burn near Wise River this week.
The burn will be in Triangle Gulch, about three miles east of Wise River. The BLM will burn a small area of approximately eight acres. The burn may take up to three days to complete and will take place when weather and fuel conditions are favorable, but could occur anytime, starting Wednesday morning.
The BLM is considering carrying out the burn because of recent favorable weather conditions at the burn site, the amount of small acreage involved, and the availability of fire suppression resources to control the burn.
The burn will focus on removing conifer slash in the unit to restore the historic vegetative conditions characterized by upland willow and aspen stands.
The BLM reminds the public that precipitation levels in the region are still below normal and that fuel conditions can change quickly. Extreme caution should be used when engaging in outdoor activities this Memorial Day weekend. A campfire should never be left unattended, and campers must make sure coals are cool to the touch before they leave the campsite.
For more information about the controlled burn, contact Greg Campbell at the Butte Field Office at (406) 533-7600.
