Condon Mountain Fire at 5,100 acres

CONDON - Nearly 200 people are still battling the 5,100-acre Condon Mountain Fire, which is 45% contained as it burns just west of the Bob Marshall Wilderness.

All residents who live east of Montana Highway 83 in the Condon are remain under a Stage 1 Alert and need to be ready in case an evacuation is needed.

The blaze is burning in heavy timber with numerous, standing snags in hazardous terrain, and structure protection has been set up for the structures closest to the fire between McKay and Cooney creeks.

Fire managers say that they've finished burnout operations were completed between Falls Creek and Smith Creek, bringing fire down to the primary containment line on the west side.

Helicopters were again used for water bucket drops to cool hotspots on Thursday, and an air quality monitor was set up at the Condon Work Center.

A community meeting was held in Condon Thursday evening drew about 70 people.

There is an Area Closure around the fire for public safety, which includes closure of Trail #29 (Smith-Little Salmon), Trail #192 (East Foothill) and the Cooney Lookout. Trails #415 and #42 remain open.
