Seventy to eighty percent of car seats are installed incorrectly, according to Captain Marc Lee of the Butte-Silver Bow Fire Department.

The fire department offers a program to help install child passenger safety seats properly. By calling the local fire department you can schedule a free appointment for assistance with your car seats. The fire department will show you how to install and buckle up properly, according to Lee.

All car seat brands must meet federal government standards, Lee said. The fire department recommends a child should transition from a rear-facing car seat to a forward-facing seat at two years old.

"We don't know when we are going to be in a crash and so that's one thing that we really advocate especially when it comes to child-passenger safety is to put people and children in the best pre-crash position possible if there ever is a crash present," Lee said.

Call the Butte-Silver Bow Fire Department at 406-782-9509 to schedule an appointment.
