WASHINGTON, DC - Multiple sources are reporting that Senator Max Baucus has decided to retire instead of seek reelection.
The Washington Post cites two senior Democratic strategists familiar with his plans as saying Baucus is "retiring rather than seek re-election in 2014."
The Democrat, who was first elected in 1978, been the top Democrat on the powerful committee since 2001.
The likely Democratic candidate to succeed him would be former governor Brian Schweitzer, sources said.
Meanwhile, the New York Times reports that a Democratic official as saying that former Gov. Brian Schweitzer "is leaning toward running for the seat.
