The City of Bozeman finished up drilling wells in Phase Three of the Bridger Creek Subdivision Thursday. The subdivision is located next to the of City landfill that stopped accepting garbage about five years ago. From 1970-1995 garbage was buried in an unlined landfill which was standard practice at the time. Now, they want to make sure that no gases are leaching out of the landfill.
"Several wells on site, on the landfill property that have mixed results, I mean nothing above protection standards, we just want to make sure that everything that's going off the site are below the groundwater protection standards." said Dustin Johnson, project engineer for the City of Bozeman.
Johnson stresses that the testing is only a precuation and there is no reason for the residents to be alarmed. The wells are about 20 feet deep. Samples will be collected from them in about 10 days and shipped of to a lab for testing. The results will come back in about three months at which time the city will hold a public meeting to discuss the findings.
