COLORADO - A helicopter registered to Billings Flying Service crashed in Colorado late this morning killing one person.
Dolores County Sheriff's Officers and emergency response personnel responded to a 911 call of a helicopter crash at 10 a.m. about five miles east of Dove Creek, Colo. The area is in southwest Colorado near the Colorado-Utah border, 35 miles north of Cortez.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Allen Kenitzer tells MTN the Bell UH-1H Iroquois crashed while performing seismographic operations at an oil drilling rig in the area.
As of this report, neither the Dolores County Sheriff's Office nor the Dolores County Coroner have officially released the pilot's identity pending notification of family members.
The pilot, a Billings man, was the only occupant on-board the aircraft and is believed to have died shortly after impact.
The National Transportation Safety Board is currently leading the investigation in coordination with the FAA and Dolores County Sheriff's Office.
