Belgrade High School student in custody, accused of bringing gun to school

BELGRADE - A Belgrade High School student is in custody after reportedly stealing a gun and bringing it to the school.

On the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 6, Belgrade police responded to a reported burglary near the high school. The case continued to be investigated the next day and the Belgrade High School was placed under safety restrictions known as "shelter in place."

That day, Thursday, Feb. 7, a suspect, a Belgrade High student, was identified and taken into custody. According to police, the youth took property from a residence and returned to the high school during the day. One of the items was a handgun, according to police.

Police determined that the student entered the high school with the handgun on Wednesday, according to a news release. The handgun was reportedly removed from the school a short time later.

"This took place at Belgrade High School and no other Belgrade school was involved. Based on the initial information, School Officials took appropriate precautions to ensure the safety of students and staff," the release states.

The youth suspect remains in custody.

School officials and police said in the release that they are confident that there was no threat to students or staff members.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Belgrade police at 388-4262.
