BUTTE - A bear was found in a tree in a neighborhood on the southeast end of Butte on Tuesday evening.
Katie Haxby of Butte was an eyewitness to the incident. "He was huge, up there just hanging out in the tree just curled up in a U," she said.
She snapped the above picture of the bear, which wildlife officials estimated, weighed 150 pounds.
Her 11-year-old daughter Macie found the bear a bit intimidating.
"First, I thought it had a big face and it looked at me like its midnight snack," Macie said.
Wildlife officials speculate the bear came down from the east ridge and wandered into the neighborhood where it got stuck in a tree for a while.
In order for the bear to get back home, he would have had to cross over a bridge to get back into the east ridge or run the risk of going across a very busy highway.
Police and FWP officials kept people away from the bear and allowed it to leave on its own.
Butte Undersheriff George Skuletich said, "Bear was still in the tree."
He said, "Just wait on it a while and see what happens. We went back at 5:30 in the morning, the bear was gone and hopefully it went back up to the hill where it belonged."
