The high school sports season may be over, but that's not slowing down this week's Athlete of the Week.
Shields Valley junior Casey McInerney is an all-state volleyball player. She is also an all-state basketball player and she's an all-state track performer, placing second with her 4x400-meter relay team.
"I like being active, I guess," Casey said.
Casey, who has two older sisters who were also athletes of the year at Shields Valley, has been a starter in all three sports since her freshman year. In volleyball, she even played at the AAU Junior Nationals in Orlando, Florida this year.
"It's just like the feeling you get before you go out to play a game, like you have that excitement and you have adrenalin flowing through you and you get to go out and actually play, or in track, run. It's just that feeling of excitement and purpose and working hard for your team," Casey said.
While she's been doing all this, Casey has kept a 3.81 grade point average in advanced studies and missed the district track meet this season because she was selected to go to the Business Professionals of America national competition in Florida.
"Sports can only get me so far, but when I step out into the real world I have to be able to hold my own and have enough education to get me there," she said.
