BOZEMAN - This week's Athlete of the Week is Darby Drenzek, a sophomore at Bozeman High School and a state champion gymnast.
The 15-year-old is a member of the Lone Mountain gymnastics team. At last weekend's state gymnastics meet, she won four gold medals, including the all-around championship for level 7.
"I like that it's a lot of fun and it keeps me in shape, and I'm here with some of my best friends," Darby said.
Success in the gym hasn't come easy for her, though. Darby stands 5' 9" tall, which is about a foot taller than a lot of champion gymnasts.
"Darby definitely has a unique obstacle because of her size. Not only is she really tall, but her arms are really long, and gymnastics is definitely a sport made for smaller people, so she's really overcome everything as far as length goes and done a fantastic job," her coach, Josh Burnham, said.
Darby works hard. She puts in three and a half hours a day, year round.
"A lot of time in the gym for sure and not a lot of time hanging out on the weekends or anything. Gym has basically been my main priority," she said.
Because she has worked so hard, Darby has accomplished the first part of her goal. Her next goal is competing in college.
"I think if I worked really hard, I think I'd have maybe a shot at it," she said.
