ANACONDA - Pintler Pets will have the right to turn away animals from the shelter, according to Candy Burch, vice president of Pintler Pets.
They were once required to take in all cats and dogs. In the past year, the shelter has been over-run with feral cats, according to Burch.
Feral cats, or wild cats, spread disease. Pintler Pets has shouldered the cost of expensive medical bills and large amounts of cat food and litter.
Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Commissioners accepted the shelter's request to rewrite their contract.
"They are so good-hearted there," said Elaine Lux-Burt, district 5 commissioner of Anaconda-Deer Lodge County. "They are such animal lovers. I think they could be a pretty good judge if an animal is adoptable. If it's something they are afraid of, it's not going to find a home."
The new contract between Pintler Pets and the county will come into effect when both parties have signed the document.
