Bobcat fans and Griz fans across Montana have one more week to wait for the season's most anticipated football game. But until then they can help their teams in a competition off the field.
The 10th annual Can the Griz and Can the Cats food drives are underway.
While the Montana State University Bobcats did not pull off the big win in last year's Brawl of the Wild, they did achieve victory in another contest, the Can the Griz Food Drive.
The event gathers non-perishable food items for the Missoula and Gallatin Valley food banks.Last year the Cats won by thousands of pounds of food.
"Yeah, traditionally I think, the Bozeman community and the Bobcat supporters are just more in to the competition," said Ariel Donohue with the MSU Office of Community Involvement.
Bins are set up in various places around both campuses and in each city.
Bobcat fans may have beaten Griz fans in the food drive last year, but this year the Griz have a strategy on how to beat the Bobcats off the field and on the field.
"This year is a lot more community outreach. Last year the focus was really on the campus and just collecting games," said Ashley Weidtfeldt with University of Montana's Office for Civic Engagement.
"We're kind of going door to door. The Office of Civic Engagement is going to be at the football game as well as picking up those grocery store partnerships," University of Montana Greek Life Advisor Tyson McLean said.
The two student organizations say they've had a good community response with several businesses around Missoula starting food drives to help the Griz.
"Sort of brings together community spirit too around the, you know, the Griz/Cat football game but also around helping each other," Weidtfeldt said.
Food can be donated until Nov. 21.
Griz fans can even donate to their team's effort at the game, which is in Bozeman.
