Great Falls has been host to memories and recognition for countless veterans and members of the military thanks to the Montana Veteran's Memorial that was erected in 1999.

Now, in addition to the existing memories, the memorial has some new additions.

Donna Kohnke and her family were among some of the first to have loved ones posted on the Montana Veteran's Memorial.

"When you think about the Vietnam people who went and came back and now our sons that are going now, it's just very important to honor the service that they've done," Kohnke said.

Kohnke's father served in the army, her mother in the United States Navy.

"We forget. We think we're the modern generation and that, but they paved the way for us and I think we forget," she said.

Now she drives to Great Falls from Billings when she can to visit the site.

Kohnke's parents are among over 4,600 military members honored at the site. That number continues to grow.

"Our architect is working on where to expand," Montana Veteran's Memorial President Gina McDermott said.

Saturday the Montana Veteran's Memorial welcomed 130 new tiles to the monument, including two very special tiles. One tile was placed for the great grandfather of a member of the memorial's committee, a man who served in the Confederate army during the Civil War. The other was made for Minnie Spotted Wolf, the first Native American woman to join the Marine Corps.

"Anybody actually can be honored at the Montana Veteran's Memorial. It's called the Montana Veteran's Memorial because we're here, but we actually have veterans on the wall from across the United States and some Canadians," McDermott said.

The new tiles were put in place just in time for Veteran's Day.

There is still plenty of room for more veterans with about 12,000 spaces still open.

Memorial committee members will host a celebration on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. to honor all the new and old military members who are part of the wall. The ceremony will have a special theme, "Women in the Military."
