Wind turbines to help MT schools

Some 3,000 acres of school trust land near Martinsdale will soon be home to 15 wind turbines, part of a proposed 300-megawatt wind farm.

Most of the wind farm will be built on 15,000 acres owned by the Martinsdale Hutterite Colony, with the first phase expected to cost about $200 million, including the 15 turbines on state land.

Houston-based Horizon Wind Energy hopes to start building in 2010 and when completed, the wind farm could bring the state between $36,000 and $79,000 in annual payments, revenue that is set aside for public schools.
