The Montana House of Representatives has been considering legislation that some believe could allow Montana to secede from the United States.
House Resolution 3 says the state's compact with the union should be considered "breached" if Congress enters into a treaty that nullifies Montana's rights.
The bill's sponsor says its ultimate goal is not about secession from the United States, but is a measure to ensure the federal government's authority does not exceed constitutional provisions regarding state rights.
"What is this resolution about? It is about sovereignty. It is about the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence preceding it, and it is about the law- Montana law" explained Representative Michael More (R-Gallatin Gateway).
The bill was tied up with a 50-50 vote and has failed to move on past its second reading.
